Alle typer bibliotek kan bli kåra til Årets bibliotek, og kven som helst kan koma med framlegg.

Prisen går til eit bibliotek som dei seinare åra har utvikla nye idéar eller utmerka seg gjennom eit godt og effektivt samarbeid med dei som bruker biblioteket. Å bli kåra til Årets bibliotek gir mykje positiv merksemd rundt eit bibliotek som fortener det, samstundes som det kan løfte fram fleire bibliotek.



Årets bibliotek har blitt kåra sidan 1988. Både skulebibliotek, folkebibliotek, bokbuss, fagbibliotek og digitale bibliotek er tidlegare vinnarar.
